Manchesters Latest Holiday Inn Gets Underway

Published on 23-08-2010 by Skyscrapernews.com
The expanding the budget hotel sector in the face of recession seems one of the few things to just about be keeping the construction industry off its knees right now. The latest of these is a ten floor new Holiday Inn Express sited off Higher Oswald Street and Goadsby Street in central Manchester's Northern Quarter that has seen a constant stream of development over the last decade or so although little new work starting since the recession hit in 2008.

The project has been designed by Mark Weintraub Architecture and Design, who have penned it to have 192 bedrooms above the ground floor, a service core set to one side that is an extra storey in height and features some very noticeable branding of the hotel operator, and a 1,300 square metre public plaza.

As a result of this the building is positioned so that its back, not its front, is aligned along Swan Street whilst the entrance directly addresses the public square.

On this façade the cladding is dominated by rainscreen ceramic panels in a mixture of greens, yellows, browns and cyans with little prominent architectural detailing beyond a projecting window framed in aluminium. This is partly continued around the front of the building too although a dark blue glazed feature projects beyond it for almost the full height of the building offering floor to ceiling glass windows for the occupiers.

The scheme is being fdelopved by Ician with John Sisk & Son as the main contractor of the £10 million project which is set to be completed in September 2011.
