GRID Strand Scheme Greenlit

Planning approval has finally been given for a major new mixed-use scheme situated on the Strand, in the heart of London's West End.
Having beaten off competition from leading firms MAKE, Eric Parry and Squire & Partners way back in 2008, GRID Architects, will finally be realise their dreams for 190 The Strand.
The site, which is currently occupied by office buildings, will receive a major facelift thanks to the proposals. This includes Maltravers Street being literally wiped from the map thanks to the fact it currently divides the site, the widening of the wonderfully named Tweezers Alley, while the crescent to Strand will be reintroduced with a series of new frontages.
The existing office buildings will be replaced a series of blocks arranged around two central courtyards connected together by an internal colonnade.
These will housea total of 206 apartments along with approximately 2,000 square metres of restaurant, leisure, business facilities, and retail space to help animate the valuable ground level.
For external décor, the facades of the project will be layered and use a combination of stone, metal work and glass which gives a modern feel. At the same time they should still meld with the neighbouring Victorian era buildings surrounding the site thanks to touches like the mansard roofs that the upper levels boast.
Cut metal filigree breaks up the simplicity of the buildings faces, and is also used to create the roof form which appears solid when viewed from the outside, but provides views of the surrounding area when viewed from the roof terraces plus solar shading.
The scheme is being developed by Mourant Property Trustees whilst Berkeley Homes, a mass homebuilder who are moving ever up market these days in search of higher margins, are working as the development manager on the scheme.
