Greenday to record....power pop album?!

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has hinted that the follow-up to their multi-million selling 2004 release American Idiot could be a power-pop album.

"I really like *censor* with arrangements and I always try to look at the possibilities of how you write power-pop music," Armstrong told US magazine Alternative Press. "You know, it's like, how do you take something and try to expand on the idea of what is supposed to be three-chord mayhem? I'm pushing myself to be progressive in songwriting and being a songwriter."

The band are currently holed up in a Los Angeles studio with producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage, Against Me!). Armstrong revealed that the songwriting is proving to be a "painstaking process".

"I'm allowing time for the process to happen naturally without having to force it," Armstrong told AP. "That is a painstaking process, let me tell you! For a bunch of guys that are ADHD [Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder], it's hard to have patience!"

The as-yet-untitled album will be released next summer.

Why do bands stray away from the type of music people know them as? Linkin Park did it, and look what happened to them. If you don't get what I mean, listen to Hybrid Theory, then Minutes To Midnight. Hear the differance?

American Idiot was a great album, wish I could say the same about Minutes to Midnight. It isn't that far detached from the Kerplunk!, Dookie kind of sound. If anything it's more similar than Insomniac or nimrod. were. They just basically have a bigger production, and a lot more going on. I guess it's slower on average too, but St. Jimmy and Jesus of Suburbia, Homecoming, sound a lot more Green Day than stuff like Church on Sunday, Reject... I do like Insomniac, it's probably their heaviest and has some awesome songs, but it's obvious that it's Green Day no matter what album you're listening to, and as long as it has good songs, who gives a crap? Since about 2002, they've never really let me down with consistency, every album they've put out has at least four really good songs, I'd say, some are just more cluttered with filler than others.

I agree 100%, I have a lot of faith that it'll sound like Green Day, maybe just with a little twist. You know they couldn't do the same thing as American Idiot, or any other of their albums for that matter. Everyone is looking at them for what comes AFTER a great success that American Idiot was. In my opinion, Billie Joe Armstrong can do no wrong.
